The Crime Bureau is a public crime, fraud and scam registry operated by Safe City Solutions (Pty) Ltd, a company incorporated in the Republic of South Africa. You can report to us anonymously — no account is required. Depending on how you use the service, we may process:
Reports may include information about alleged criminal conduct, which is special personal information under POPIA. We process it for the prevention, detection, investigation and reporting of offences, as permitted by the Act, and apply additional safeguards. Please do not submit more personal information about other people than is necessary to describe the incident.
Reports are intake only. Nothing you submit is treated as fact or published until it has been reviewed and verified. Unverified reports remain private. Anyone who believes they have been wrongly listed can dispute it using the contact details below, and we will review and correct or remove information where appropriate.
We process personal information to build and maintain a verified crime and fraud record that protects the public, to route reports to the Safer City control room and, where lawful, to the relevant authorities, and to keep the service secure. Our lawful bases under POPIA include: the protection of a legitimate interest (public safety and crime prevention), compliance with an obligation imposed by law, the performance of a public-interest task, and your consent where you voluntarily provide optional details.
We share personal information on a need-to-know basis with: the Safer City control room and verified responder partners; our service providers ("operators") who host and secure the platform under written contract; and law-enforcement or regulatory authorities where lawful or required. We do not sell personal information, and we do not use it for third-party advertising.
We aim to keep the site lightweight. We use privacy-friendly, aggregate analytics to understand how the site is used (for example page views and referring sites); these do not build advertising profiles of you. We use only the cookies or local storage necessary for the site to function and to keep it secure.
We apply appropriate technical and organisational safeguards, including HTTPS/encryption in transit and access controls. We keep personal information only for as long as necessary for the purposes above or as required by law, after which it is deleted or anonymised. Some of our service providers may process data outside South Africa; where that happens we take steps to ensure a comparable level of protection as required by POPIA.
The service is intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children except where it forms part of a report about an incident, in which case it is handled as special personal information with additional care.

We may update this policy from time to time. The current version is always available on this page, with the "last updated" note reflecting the latest change.
