Privacy, PAIA & Terms

The Crime Bureau is operated by Safer City Solutions (Pty) Ltd ("Safer City", "we"). Last updated: on publication.

Working draft for review. This notice is a good-faith draft aligned to the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and PAIA. It must be reviewed and signed off by a qualified attorney before it is relied upon, and completed with the registered company details and appointed Information Officer. It is not legal advice.

Privacy notice (POPIA)

The Crime Bureau lets the public report crime, fraud and scams. You can report anonymously — no account is required.

Information we process

  • Report content: what you submit — a description, category, location and time, and any numbers, emails, websites, plates or serials you include.
  • Optional contact: your email address, only if you choose to give it for a confirmation or reference.
  • Technical data: limited request data (e.g. IP address and timestamp) captured by our servers to prevent abuse and spam.
  • Wanted notices: official notices republished with attribution from the FBI, Interpol and SAPS — we do not create these.

Special personal information

Reports may include information about alleged criminal conduct, which is special personal information under POPIA. We process it for the prevention, detection and reporting of offences, and apply safeguards accordingly.

Verify before publish

Reports are intake only. Nothing you submit is treated as fact or published until it has been reviewed and verified. Unverified reports stay private. Anyone who believes they are wrongly listed can dispute it via the contact below.

Why we process it & sharing

To build a verified crime & fraud record that protects the public, and to route reports to the Safer City control room and, where lawful, to relevant authorities. We share on a need-to-know basis with our processors and authorities; we do not sell personal information.

Security, retention & your rights

We apply appropriate safeguards (HTTPS, access controls) and keep information only as long as necessary. Subject to POPIA you may request access to, correction or deletion of your personal information, and object to processing — contact our Information Officer below, or complain to the Information Regulator.

PAIA (access to information)

Under the Promotion of Access to Information Act you may request access to records we hold, via the Information Officer using the prescribed form, subject to the Act's grounds for refusal and prescribed fees. Our full PAIA manual is available on request and will be published here once finalised.

Terms of use

  • Report truthfully and in good faith. Knowingly false or malicious reports are prohibited and may be unlawful.
  • Do not misuse the service, attempt unauthorised access, or submit others' personal information without a lawful basis.
  • Content is provided "as is"; to the extent permitted by law we exclude liability for indirect or consequential loss.
  • Emergencies must go to the SAPS — call 10111. The Crime Bureau is not an emergency service.
  • These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of South Africa.
